Human Population and Where it’s Headed
This writing is my work alone. I have not gotten any unauthorized help.
Population has always been a major concern for any nation that is looking to strive. Of course there are the ways that differ in population control from country to country, but whose ways are really the most effective? I decided to dive deeper into the idea of the human population, and I wanted to take a closer look at what we might be doing right or doing wrong regarding our situation. I will be looking at two main articles about the situation.
There are simply two main ways you can deal with population, you can wait it out, or you can control it. Most scientists will recommend controlling it; because the ramifications are very dangerous if you let the population get out of control. Of course the amount of pollution will rise, because there have been an increased number of humans in the world, and therefore an increased amount of sources. There will also be more people needing to buy homes, and rent businesses causing the deforestation rate to continue to rise. However, what will happen if we are to control the population and things start to continue going down that road regardless of what we have accomplished? I recently read an article that talked about population control and it gave me a good perspective on the whole thing.
This article by the author Matt Mcgrath dives into the problems that we face today, and talks about how population control is not the way to go about minimizing those problems. He even goes in to talk about a study that was done called, “Can’t Stop It”. This study said that basically 14% of people who had ever been on earth before and to this day, were still living. What this means is that the number of people that are on this earth is growing, and even more it is growing at a rate that we are not able to control. The problem with the ever growing population is simply that we are going to continue making a substantial negative impact on the environment. We already do enough to hurt the environment as it is, but with the population to only keep increasing we are sure to do a number on the well being of us all. He ends by talking about how the only real way to help the situation is to teach about reproduction so as to ensure that we will not have too many people who are producing children, and the other way is through effective Planned Parenthood (Mcgrath 1).
However, there are a great number of people in the world who feel as if population control is not going to decrease just by effective use of Planned Parenthood. There are other people who have solutions that are different. I read an article that gave ten main ways that we can control the population and to say the least they were interesting. The number one way that we can control the population is by delaying marriages. Delaying marriages will cause the couples to wait to have their children, and therefore lowering the amount of children that they will have once they are married. The most common event that is happening is that these couples are getting married young, and then they are deciding that they have the ability to have a large amount of children. What they do not realize is that their decision to have many kids ultimately effects the entire world as well. The second way that we can reduce population control is by having medical facilities more available to rural areas. Since they do not have many available, the residents of those areas are having more children in order to increase possibilities of survival. The third way we can reduce the population is by legislative actions taken against child labor. This may sound like a bit of a stretch, but by enforcing a law against the selling of your child for work, means that a parent may not produce as many kids. The fourth way is by providing incentives. This way is my least favorite of the ways, but does have some merit to it. People don’t like to do things for free, but if you add money to the equation they will do just about anything, including have less kids. The fifth way is by simply spreading awareness of the problem. People are not stupid, if they hear of the negative effects that over population can have on the place that we live, they will take steps to prevent it. Unfortunately there are not enough people in the world trying to show what is going to happen if we continue to live like this, and so things are not changing. The sixth way is by empowering women, and showing them that they are worth more than just birthing a child. In some countries, the only thing that women are used for is child birth, and therefore by showing them they have another purpose they will stand up against this inequality with something to prove. The seventh way the article mentions is by eradicating poverty, of course it’s no secret that poverty as a pretty close relationship with population and with slave labor. The selling of their children or forcing them to labor is ultimately causing an incentive to produce more kids, and therefore causing the population to continue to rise. The eighth way we can reduce population is by education. Until this class I had not recently learned about the idea of population control, and I now realize that this is a big deal. By offering education on the topic, we ultimately are increasing our chances of spreading awareness at a younger age. The ninth way says that we need to make contraceptives cheap and easily available in order to decrease the birth rate. And the final way to help cut population is by development, and more specific in gender and race equality (Smit pgs 1-7).
Now, I realize that these ten steps are a reach to a population that does not feel the need to be controlled. However, there are other ways that may seem “immoral” to most people. This article simply touched on the ways that we can take care of this problem humanely and justly. Population control is not just something that should be overlooked; it is a problem that we are going to be faced with continually until we find a way to deal with it. These articles have given us a better perspective on what could happen if we are not control, and even a few ideas on how to control it. It is our duty as humans, and more importantly as creations of God to view this earth as a privilege to live on, and not to treat it like a dump.
